Salvation

Perseverance of the Saints

Confessional Text

All true believers endure to the end85. Those whom God has accepted in Christ and sanctified by His Spirit, will never be separated from the love of God, but shall persevere and be preserved to the end86. Believers may fall into sin through neglect and temptation87, thereby grieving the Spirit88, compromising their friendship with and comforts from God, and bringing reproach on the name of Christ, as well as bringing temporal judgments upon themselves89. Even then, they shall never be abandoned in this life, and God will bring them safely home90.

Historical & Theological Background

The doctrine of perseverance (also called eternal security) has been debated throughout church history. Reformed theology teaches that those truly saved will persevere to the end, not because of their strength but because God preserves them. True believers cannot lose their salvation because it depends on God's faithfulness, not ours. However, this is not "once saved, always saved" in a careless sense—genuine believers will endure, and their endurance is evidence of true salvation. Backsliding is real and serious, but God disciplines His children and ultimately brings them home.

African Contextual Commentary

Many African Christians live in fear of losing salvation through sin, while others presume upon God's grace, living carelessly because they believe they cannot lose salvation. This statement provides biblical balance: true believers will persevere because God preserves them. Salvation is eternally secure, not because we hold onto God, but because He holds onto us. However, believers can fall into sin, grieve the Holy Spirit, and face temporal consequences. God disciplines His children because He loves them. This should produce both confidence (we cannot be snatched from God's hand) and reverence (we should not presume upon His grace). For African believers facing persecution, this doctrine provides great comfort: nothing can separate us from God's love.
