Rejection of Generational Curses
Confessional Text
There is no such thing as generational curses166. Sinful patterns of living can be learned and passed down from parents to children, and even passed down in entire communities, but it is not a generational curse167. These sinful patterns change in any individual, family or community with the transformation that comes from salvation and sanctification168.

Ezekiel 18:3-4
As I live, says the Lord God, you shall no longer use this proverb in Israel. Behold, all souls are Mine; the soul of the father as well as the soul of the son is Mine; the soul who sins shall die.
Ezekiel 18:19-20
Because he has done all these things, he shall surely die; his blood shall be upon him. The soul who sins shall die. The son shall not bear the guilt of the father, nor the father bear the guilt of the son. The righteousness of the righteous shall be upon himself, and the wickedness of the wicked shall be upon himself.

2 Chronicles 30:7-8
Do not be like your fathers and your brethren, who trespassed against the Lord God of their fathers, so that He gave them up to desolation, as you see. Now do not be stiff-necked, as your fathers were, but yield yourselves to the Lord.
Psalm 78:1-8
Give ear, O my people, to my law; incline your ears to the words of my mouth. I will open my mouth in a parable; I will utter dark sayings of old, which we have heard and known, and our fathers have told us. We will not hide them from their children, telling to the generation to come the praises of the Lord, and His strength and His wonderful works that He has done.

Romans 12:1-2
I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that you present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable to God, which is your reasonable service. And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God.
Ephesians 4:17-24
This I say, therefore, and testify in the Lord, that you should no longer walk as the rest of the Gentiles walk, in the futility of their mind.
Colossians 3:5-17
Therefore put to death your members which are on the earth: fornication, uncleanness, passion, evil desire, and covetousness, which is idolatry.

Historical & Theological Background
Scripture clearly teaches individual moral responsibility. While sin has social and familial dimensions, each person is responsible for their own sin. Ezekiel 18 explicitly refutes the idea of inherited guilt. Christ's death breaks the power of sin, including sinful family patterns. In Christ, we are new creations.
African Contextual Commentary
The doctrine of generational curses is widespread in African Christianity and is pastorally destructive. It teaches that believers can be cursed due to ancestors' sins, requiring special deliverance. This is false. Yes, sinful habits and patterns can be modeled and learned in families and communities (alcoholism, abuse, occult involvement), but these are not curses—they are learned behaviors. They change through repentance, the gospel, and sanctification, not through curse-breaking rituals. If you are in Christ, you are a new creation. Your ancestors' sins do not curse you. You are responsible for your own sin and free to break sinful patterns through the power of the Spirit. African believers must reject this false teaching and embrace the freedom and responsibility that come with being in Christ.
