Historical & Theological Background

From the earliest days of the church, Christians have affirmed that human beings are uniquely created in God's image, which distinguishes humanity from all other creatures. This image includes rationality, morality, relationality, and the capacity for spiritual communion with God. Both men and women equally bear God's image, though they have distinct roles in creation. The doctrine of the imago Dei grounds human dignity, the sanctity of life, and our stewardship responsibility over creation.

African Contextual Commentary

In African contexts where animistic worldviews may blur the distinction between humans and nature, or where tribal hierarchies may diminish the worth of certain groups, this statement affirms the unique dignity of all human beings. Every person—regardless of tribe, status, gender, or ability—bears God's image and has inherent worth. This also corrects prosperity theology's tendency to reduce humans to mere consumers of God's blessings. We exist primarily for God's glory and to be in relationship with Him, not merely for material prosperity. Additionally, the creation mandate to "subdue the earth" gives biblical warrant for African development, environmental stewardship, and cultural engagement.
